Iza Jaroszewska
"Iceland"

My journey to Iceland was extraordinary for many reasons. It chose me by itself. I was asked to run photography workshops and I suddenly found myself in a very strange place. I was surprised by the open space, as far as the eye could see, covered by dark volcanic lava, bereft of trees and in the constant company of wind. Because it was June, the time of the summer solstice, the Sun practically never went down beyond the horizon. The day never ended. Long shadows and an amazing light create the aura of most of my photographs. I couldn’t sleep because of the constant wind and the absence of night. Many photographs were taken as a result of insomnia at about one in the morning. For unknown reasons my watch stopped working and I completely lost any sense of time. This was my internal state in which most of my photographs came into being. Beyond time and space. In such a state the symbolic sense of everything that we see unveils itself before us in a most natural manner. The complete fusion with what appears externally and perceiving the dependencies between all phenomena, as well as the clarity of each particular phenomenon, constitutes the principle of the Mandala. In the Mandala everything concentrates around space without an observer. Every experience leads to another and all are connected to each other. The pattern which is created by successive visual experiences suddenly becomes clear, because we are looking at them without prejudice, without judgment and without a categorization of the mind. Consciousness becomes clear and reaches everywhere. A panoramic camera was used to additionally heighten the feeling of never ending space. (PhD Izabela Jaroszewska)
